What is acne?

While many people suffer from it, not everyone understands just what exactly acne is. Acne is defined as congestion and inflammation of skin follicles, presenting as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules and/or nodules. Acne can be very minor – with few periodic blackheads and blemishes – to quite severe – with scar-causing, inflamed and sometimes disfiguring papules and nodules.

What causes acne?

For starters, acne is not a symptom of poor diet and it is not an indication of one’s hygiene habits. Acne is caused by specific conditions: acne bacteria gets trapped in the skin follicle by congestion. That congestion may be caused by a buildup of debris and/or sloughing skin cells. Oily skin types are more prone to acne for the fact their skin is more likely to congest. Skin can be over-treated or chemically or mechanically dehydrated and experience a compensatory over-production of sebum (oil) resulting in a congested effect. It is unknown why some skin types are more prone to host acne-causing bacteria but those skin types are most likely to experience a degree of acne in their lifetime.
