What is sun damage?
The term sun damage refers to more than just that pesky sunburn you got on vacation last spring. In fact, it’s estimated that 90% of the signs of skin aging are due to excessive sun exposure over our lifetime. That’s right, sun damage can lead to premature aging and manifest with wrinkles, dull and dehydrated skin, rough and thick skin texture, sun spots, freckles, broken blood vessels, and even a loss of firmness and elasticity. Taken further, the skin can start producing precancerous rough red spots called actinic keratoses, sometimes resulting in skin cancers. These skin changes can begin as early as our twenties, and without intervention, will continue to develop over time.
What causes sun damage?
You guessed it; sun damage is in fact caused by the sun – the various forms of radiation emitted from the sun, to be exact. Repeated, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun’s rays has damaging effects on the skin as a result of oxidization, ionization, damage to the skin’s DNA and weakened skin immunity. Any amount of time spent unprotected in the sun effectively accelerates the effects of aging and increases your risk of developing skin cancer.
