What is excessive sweating?

Sweating is an important and natural process by which our body regulates temperature. When this process is over-productive, it can negatively affect confidence and self-esteem, and become a burden. Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is generally localized to areas such as the armpits, palms, soles of the feet and face or scalp, but can sometimes affect the entire body. The severity of the condition relates to the extent that the symptoms—sweaty hands, stained or dampened clothing, and even dermatitis caused by frequent chafing and hand washing – interfere with day-to-day activities. After all, it’s hard to be your most confident self when you fear lifting your arms or shaking a colleague’s hand.

What causes excessive sweating?

There are two categories of hyperhidrosis: localized and generalized. Localized hyperhidrosis usually affects a single area, and can be triggered by fear and anxiety, spicy foods, alcohol, exercise and hot weather. Generalized hyperhidrosis affects the entire body and is often associated with underlying causes such as menopause, thyroid conditions, nervous system disorders and certain medications. Localized excessive sweating is simply that, it is localized to specific areas and does not mean that there is anything wrong with our health. The tendency can sometimes be inherited.
