What is acne scarring?

Acne can be a painful and embarrassing condition, and unfortunately the physical and emotional effects can last long after it disappears. Dealing with congested skin and periodic breakouts is challenging enough, but the dark marks and scars acne may leave behind are often worse. Acne scars can present in a variety of ways including discolouration, hypertrophic scars (thick, raised scars that stick out above the skin), keloid scars (where an overgrowth of scar tissue occurs), and atrophic scars (pitted depressions in the skin, resembling deep pores). No matter their appearance, acne scars can greatly impact self-esteem and confidence.

What causes acne scarring?

Not all cases will result in scarring, but when acne is severe, your skin reacts to the lesions in the same way it would a traumatic wound. When damage is caused to the skin, the body responds by forming new collagen fibers to repair the injury. Scarring occurs when the body creates too much collagen (which results in a keloid or hypertrophic scar) or too little (which results in an atrophic or thin scar). For some, acne scarring can be prevented, while for others it’s an unavoidable reality. Aside from genetic skin healing factors, lifestyle habits such as unprotected sun exposure or picking and squeezing pimples and blemishes can cause further damage.
