What are scars?

As we go through life, we accumulate scars in many ways and in many forms. From etchings of small scrapes and scratches, to traumatic scars and radiation or surgical scars, our skin can be left with reminders of injuries past that affect how we feel about our appearance in the present. Much like the experiences that form them, scars come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. Hypertrophic scars present as thick, raised scars that stick out above the skin, while keloid scars occur as a result of an overgrowth of scar tissue and can result in disfiguring skin abnormalities. However they’re acquired, scars often cause discomfort and embarrassment, greatly impacting self-esteem.

What causes scars?

Scars are a natural response from the body’s healing process, and most wounds result in some degree of scarring. When your skin is injured, whether it’s following a fall, a surgery, or even acne, your body responds by forming new collagen fibres to repair the injury. Hypertrophic and keloid scarring occurs when the body creates too much collagen to replace the normal tissue, resulting in a raised, fibrous scar. Some scars such as stretch marks are due to loss of collagen and/or elastin and can also lose pigmentation. Scars often can’t be avoided, but some genetic factors and lifestyle habits, such as sun exposure or improper wound care, can cause further damage.
