What is melasma?

If you’ve noticed faint to dark brown discolouration or shadow-like patches of pigmentation around your face, you may be experiencing melasma. This skin condition is extremely common, especially in women, and typically appears on the forehead, upper lip, temples, and cheeks. Initially, melasma may resemble large freckling; as it progresses, the severity and placement of the abnormal pigmentation varies.

What causes melasma?

Sun exposure and hormonal fluctuations are both thought to play a significant role in the development of melasma. The condition is also referred to as pregnancy mask, because the fluctuation of hormones experienced during pregnancy can result in these patches of uneven pigmentation; hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy may have the same effect. A family history of melasma will also increase your risk of developing the condition. The majority of the time, melasma appears for no apparent reason.

How to get rid of melasma.

Melasma is a chronic skin condition that can be difficult to treat. There is no permanent cure, but melasma treatments can significantly reduce and manage its appearance.
