What are birthmarks?

Many of us are born with distinctive marks or lesions somewhere on our face or body – we call them our birthmarks or even beauty marks. These skin blemishes can range from barely noticeable discolourations to larger, darker marks that can mask large portions of skin and even become disfiguring. For some, birthmarks cause social anxiety or low self-esteem, and in some cases, birthmarks are linked to serious medical conditions.

What causes birthmarks?

There are many different types of birthmarks. Two common types are vascular (red) and pigmented (brown) birthmarks. Vascular birthmarks such as port wine stains are usually red-purple in colour and appear when blood vessels below the skin form incorrectly. Pigmented birthmarks are the result of an excess of pigment cells and/or melanin pigment (the substance that determines skin colour) and usually present as light to dark brown spots, often irregular looking. Nevus of Ota is one type of brown birthmark. Oil gland birthmarks called Nevus Sebaceus and linear birthmarks like Epidermal Nevi are two other types that we treat. It is unknown why some of us are born with birthmarks while others are not, but genetics are believed to play a part.
