More than 80 percent of all women, and 10 percent of all men are affected by cellulite. This common and often unavoidable condition presents as an all-too-familiar dimpling or waffling of the skin in areas such as the legs, buttocks and thighs, and contrary to what many believe, is often unresponsive to changes in diet and exercise. Troubling women and men of all ages, ethnicities, shapes and sizes, the visible effects of cellulite often impact body image and self-esteem, prompting patients in British Columbia to seek solutions for this pesky condition.
Until recently, there has not been an effective treatment for the management of cellulite. Enter Cellfina™, a Health-Canada-approved, FDA-cleared procedure to improve the pesky dimples and bulges that have plagued us for so long. This may sound too good to be true, but it isn’t; Cellfina really works, and today, we’re answering some of the most common questions we’re asked about this game-changing treatment.
What causes cellulite?
There is no single determined cause for cellulite—genetics, hormones, and lifestyle factors can all come into play—but in recent years, research has helped us understand that the dimpled appearance of cellulite is actually caused by connective, fibrous bands woven through fatty tissues. These bands pin down skin and create puckering on the surface.
How does Cellfina™ work?
Similar to a rubber band under tension, the skin can bounce back to a smoother state if that tension is released, and Cellfina does just that. Using a small needle-sized device, the connective bands are “released”, and the dimples and bulges are smoothed away. Because it treats the structural cause for the appearance of cellulite, results are long-lasting.
Am I a good candidate for Cellfina™?
Cellfina is ideal for patients with localized areas of cellulite. Though not as effective for people with more severe cellulite, the treatment can still significantly reduce the waffling and dimpling in these cases. A thorough consultation can help us determine whether you’re a good candidate.
What can I expect from a treatment?
First, your cellulite dimples will be marked, and a local numbing agent will be applied to ensure a comfortable treatment. Using an innovative, vacuum-paired, proprietary technology, the dimpled areas are isolated and pulled forward. Using a small, needle-like device, the connective bands are severed and “released”. This process is repeated until all of the marked areas have been treated. A complete treatment will typically require less than an hour.
What’s the recovery like?
Following treatment, patients are able to go about their day, but may want to take it easy for up to 24 hours; a compression garment may be worn for comfort. Some tenderness and bruising can be expected, but with no disruption to your daily routine. Two to four weeks post-procedure, most patients report that bruising has completely cleared.
How soon will I see results?
Once released, the skin bounces back to smooth itself out; results may be visible instantly, and continue to improve over the following weeks and months. After just a single treatment, results will be evident for at least three years.
How much does Cellfina cost?
At Cosmedica, Cellfina treatments start at $4,500.
