Adult Acne Treatment in Victoria, BC
July 12th, 2012
Victoria, BC acne treatment for adults involves comprehensive planning at Cosmedica. Our dermatologist, Dr. Mark Lupin, and specially trained medical staff, including nurses and health care attendants, review active acne and scarring to formulate an ideal program for each patient's unique lifestyle. Programs may include advanced skin care and treatment options, optimized by topical and/systemic prescription therapies.
Acne can occur when hormone levels rise and resulting sebum production is secreted into the follicular canal. Simultaneously, keratonized cells in the follicle obstruct the excretion of sebum and clog pores. When acne-bacteria is also present in the follicle, inflammatory blemishes and pimples form. For adults, our decreasing ability for cell renewal compounds this effect - making acne possible at any age.
Adult acne patients in Victoria may benefit from the therapeutic concentrations of salicylic acid, LHA and dioic acid in SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense. This unique product efficiently reduces active acne while simultaneously treating signs of aging like texture changes and irregular pigment. The unique, patented compound of clinical ingredients encourages exfoliation and decongests pores, controls sebum production and fights acne-causing bacteria. For treatment of active acne in Victoria, BC, consider SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense and a consultation with the skin experts at Cosmedica. Contact us today.
Skin care products for acne in Victoria, BC
July 10th, 2012
Healthy skin is the result of commitment. We use skin care everyday to wash, moisturize and protect - what if those products were wrong for our skin type?
Victoria, BC patients experience a multitude of reactions to improper skin care which can include acne breakouts. For inherently acne-prone skin, ensuring the proper balance of hydration can have a very positive impact on your acne treatment.
For teen acne in Victoria, BC, Cosmedica recommends pharmaceutical-grade skin care utilizing therapeutic concentrations of benzoyl peroxide, salycylic acid and/or retinol. Try SkinTx Acne Treatment System - a two-step medicated wash and treatment lotion. Adult acne in Victoria, BC may benefit from retinol and/or salycylic acid on alternate nights. Try SkinCeuticals Retinol or Blemish + Age. Further manage excess sebum and flaking skin with SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Masque - 10 minutes once each week (great for spot treatment of face and body pimples too).
When using dehydrating agents such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or retinol, it is important to manage sebum production - ensuring your skin is receiving adequate hydration is key in the quest to control breakouts. Cosmedica recommends products with humectants - different than traditional moisturizers and less favourable to acne-causing bacteria. Humectants hydrate skin, maintaining the natural moisture barrier to help control sebum production. We recommend SkinCeuticals Daily Moisture.
Optimal acne management may include daily skin care and combine topical or systemic prescriptions. For a complimentary acne consultation, contact us today or request a consultation online.

Laser Tattoo Removal in Victoria, BC: safe treatment for optimal clearance
June 28th, 2012
Laser tattoo removal is currently the safest and most popular method of permanent tattoo removal available in Victoria, BC. By utilizing precise wavelengths of medical-grade laser energy for each individual colour of ink, lasers can safely and effectively remove tattoos. The pigment imbedded in tattoo inks will selectively absorb a specific wavelenth of laser energy until it breaks apart and the body naturally clears it away. In fact, the body will naturally attempt to breakdown tattoo inks - this is what leads to blurred tattoos. Laser tattoo removal increases the speed of this process by decades...maybe centuries!
The increasing popularity of laser tattoo removal treatments is also raising awareness of treatment and laser safety. Of primary concern, it is critical patients seeking laser tattoo removal in Victoria, BC research the devices employed for treatment. IPL (or BBL), also known as Photorejuvenation, is not true, medical-grade laser and carries a significantly lower safety profile with tattoo removal. True laser emits a pure wavelength of energy specific to a depth or colour of tattoo ink whereas the output of IPL is varied and therefore less effective for tattoo removal. Cosmedica, and other centres for medical aesthetics, utilize IPL for less specified applications such as evening overall complexion of freckled sun damage or flushing from rosacea.
Cosmedica has been providing laser tattoo removal in Victoria since 1998 and employs 5 unique lasers for optimal safety and treatment outcomes. Consultations are complimentary - contact us today or request a consultation online.
Cosmedica Laser Centre: Laser Hair Removal experts in Victoria
June 27th, 2012
The benefits of permanent hair reduction may seem obvious (less personal maintenance and more free time) but the risks and cautions are equally important when considering Laser Hair Removal in Victoria, BC.
Not all Laser Hair Removal systems are created equal. The FDA and Health Canada have a broad definition for what qualifies the treatment and so, for Victoria, BC patients, it is important to understand the differences between true, medical-grade laser systems and broad-band light-based systems. The chief difference is in how they emit their energy - medical-grade laser emits a pure wavelength of laser energy, specific to the colour and depth of hair follicles. Broad-band light devices emit a variety of wavelengths, only some of which may target hair follicles. Medical-grade Laser Hair Removal will require fewer treatments and, when treatments are provided by trained and experienced clinicians, offer a superior safety profile. Broad-band light devices, such as IPL Photorejunvenation, are certainly beneficial for other conditions and will be found in most cosmetic medical practices for improving brown and red skin discolourations like freckling from sun exposure or flushing from rosacea.
Of the selection of Laser Hair Removal devices available to Victoria, BC patients, the gold-standard system is the LightSheer DUET - a dedicated Laser Hair Removal device exclusively available at Cosmedica. The LightSheer DUET employs two separate treatments heads - one for smaller treatment areas or for detail around treatment areas, the other for quicker, more comfortable treatment of large areas like the back or legs.

1. How does the treatment work?

2. Who is a candidate for Liposonix?
Liposonix® is ideal for patients close to their target weight with stubborn fatty areas resistant to diet and exercise. Liposonix® is not a weight loss solution. Treatable areas include the tummy, love handles (flanks), outer and posterior thighs and lower buttocks.
3. Are there any risks?
As long as patients are in good health with no history of liver disease or fatty liver, Liposonix® is a very safe treatment supported by significant clinical research. Studies prove no undue stress is placed on the body.
4. Who performs the procedure and how are they trained?
Liposonix® treatment providers have undergone rigorous training under the clinical divisions of Liposonix®. Subsequently, specialized training is continued under the direction of Dr. Lupin in compliance with Cosmedica’s Non-Hospital Medical Surgical Facility Accreditation. Our treatment providers and facility abide by a highest standard of practice and care to carry this credential.
5. What does it feel like?
Each Liposonix® pulse lasts 55 seconds and covers an area roughly equivalent to nine square inches. The device will move in a serpentine pattern and can be paused at any time. Throughout those 55 seconds, sensation will fluctuate from completely comfortable to moderately pinchy. There is no lingering sensation once the pulse has completed.
6. How long does it take?
The average Liposonix® treatment takes 45 minutes to one hour.
7. Will there be any recovery?
Patients are expected to notice bruising and palpable tenderness; patients may resume regular activities but the treatment site will be tender to the touch. Cosmedica recommends a compression garment to wear over the treatment site for 5 days following treatment to stave off bruising. Oral arnica tablets or a course of GliSODin Advanced Pre/Post Formula can also reduce the period of bruising and tenderness.
8. What can I expect?
The average Liposonix® treatment will achieve a three-five centimeter circumferential reduction by 8 weeks.
9. How long have you been providing these treatments?
Cosmedica has been providing Liposonix® treatments since its immediate Health Canada and FDA clearance in early 2010.
10. What are the alternative treatment options?
Cosmedica patients may also consider UltraShape™ - an alternative ultrasound technology particularly suited to sensitive areas, for those less in need of skin tightening or averse to bruising and tenderness. Surgical liposuction under anesthesia, Lipo Laser™ or Smart Lipo™ are other considerations if surgical quality results are desired.
