HOW IT WORKS

Photodynamic Therapy is an excellent option for high-risk pre-cancerous damage and for certain types of skin cancers including superficial basal and squamous cell carcinomas and nodular basal cell carcinomas.  After a topical application of Metvix® cream, targeted lesions selectively absorb the photosensitizing agent over a 1-3 hour incubation period.  Next, patients sit for 13-15 minutes under a medical-grade red light.  This light source ‘activates’ the agent absorbed by damaged and mutated cells.  Patients are strictly advised to avoid sun light for 48 hours after which they may experience moderate exfoliation and flaking.  Photodynamic Therapy is an effective alternative to MOHs or other surgical removal processes for some varieties of skin cancers and minimizes instances of disfiguring scars.
