Blemishes

Brown Pigmentation

Melasma, known commonly as the mask of pregnancy, can develop even in individuals who have never been pregnant. It is a relatively common condition and presents as a brown patchy pigmentation on areas of the face such as the cheeks, upper lip, nose and forehead. Management includes sun protection with broad spectrum sunscreen, lightening creams and prescription creams. Glycolic peels and microdermabrasion may be helpful for surface browns. If refractory to these simpler measures, the Fraxel laser, FDA approved for melasma, is a good option. The brown pigmentation tends to recur after sun exposure such that maintenance treatments are normally helpful.

Red and Brown Spots

Small red spots termed angiomas on the face or body and brown sun freckles termed lentigines in the sun exposed areas can be treated quickly and efficiently with minimal risk. At Cosmedica, we have a range of options. If there are multiple brown freckle-type spots on the face, either the entire face can be treated with a single treatment such as with a laser micropeel, or spots can be treated individually. If there is a combination of red and brown spots, photorejuvenation may be a good choice as it treats both colours together. And if there are just individual red spots, flat or raised, these can be treated with one of our many lasers used to remove blood vessels.
